MY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY IN JCI (JUNIOR CHAMBER INTERNATIONAL)
JCI Vision:
“To be the leading global network of young active
citizens.”
JCI Mission:
“To provide development opportunities that empower
young people to create positive change.”
JCI Values:
We believe:
• That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to
human life;
• That the brotherhood of man transcends the
sovereignty of nations;
• That economic justice can best be won by free men
through free enterprise;
• That government should be of laws rather than of men;
• That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality;
• And that service to humanity is the best work of life.
I joined JCI in one of the local organisation in Penang,Malaysia named JCI Pearl which is a female chapter means we only recruit female members and purely female members. I joined as normal member in year 2016, and holding vice president position in year 2018 in business area followed by elected as Local President(LP) in year 2019.
JCI is a short form of Junior Chamber International, which accept member from age 18-40 focus in leadership development through 4 development areas which are PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, BUSINESS, COMMUNITY and INTERNATIONAL. The basic structure of the organisation is LOCAL, NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL.
Each local organization has a Board of Directors that are elected for a one-year term. The Local Organization Board of Directors might have slight differences but they will always have the following positions:
- President
- Immediate Past President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Vice Presidents/ Directors Within the local organization, you will also have Project Chairs. This leadership position is targeted to the execution of a specific project or initiative. It may last the entire year, or it may only last for a few weeks or months. The Project Chair is the leader of the Project Committee. The leadership roles within the project committee may be formal or informal. This allows members to practice leadership skills in a smaller context while they grow their skills and abilities.
I am decided to explore my opportunity in global level
In our country, the criteria to join APDC team we need to serve as Local President first. Then we seek for our local organisation endorsement from current BOD (Board of Director). Application together with the BOD meeting minute submit to NBOD (National Board of Direction) for national endorsement. So, which means that we actually represents our country to serve in global. APDC team requested high commitment and also knowledge & spirit transfer to the country assigned. Most importantly team work among team members who came from different countries. The whole journey we demonstrate leadership and building our country name and reputation too. Total 4 official meetings and 4 missions to the assigned country as basic required commitment.
APDC is our pride as Asia Pacific region, is a succession spirit that bring JCI values to different new countries to expand this organisation. It consists of more than 15 countries, under leadership of Chair Person after election from ASPAC (Asia Pacific Conference). We practice one year to lead as well while the service term is from May to May (ASPAC – ASPAC).
